Going 21st Century April 6, 2010

I’ve just installed an Airport Extreme card in my wife’s eMac (USB 2.0) model.

The wireless connection works on our Lynksys router! It’s actually quite fast. Surprisingly fast!

Yes, we’re going 21st century! It’s cool, wires are a mess, and I hope to someday go completely wireless with our Systems. Have you seen the new iPad, btw? It’s so cool!

You can even get a keyboard dock for it, among many other things I have yet to read about.

I’ve decided to scrap thoughts of installation on Linux, I simply don’t have the time to micromanage yet another operating system and I’m falling in love again with Macs and looking forward to an Intel Mac in the future to see what 21st century video streaming and dual core speed is all about.

Make no mistake: this is not going to happen overnight for upgrading to intel and I still like my PPC Macs!

Well, I’ve got my G4 AGP, installed 10.3.5 on the second partition and the 1st partition is free space – For YellowDog Linux! 🙂

Unfortunately, at this time I cannot install YDL, because neither of the optical drives I have for the 400 AGP can boot properly the DVD I’ve burned the YDL install onto. BTW, I did verify the ISO and burn it successfully, but neither the internal or the external can boot it, it’s a DVD-RW and both the drives are DVD-ROM and CD-ROM only (I guess) 😛 Although, the external Lite-On will mount the DVD on the desktop and the internal Matshita will not do so, but only half way in disk utility.

However! I have ordered a Pioneer DVR-118LBK from newegg.com and I’ll also install the patchburn utility from patchburn.de to make full use of it with Toast 6 Titanium and Jam! This Pioneer Drive I’ve ordered will also burn DL Disks, which I desperately need to back up my family pack 10.5 DVD, which is also DL DVD+R (I know this is getting nutty) That’s just the way it is with computers, and I know why people can become quite geeky about it all: You’ll always need to upgrade something, more often sooner than later.

I’ll get back on this install in about a week.

Getting ready for YDL Linux January 15, 2010

I’m almost ready to install Yellow Dog Linux I’ve downloaded the ISO from Oregon.edu and verified the SHA1 checksum. One thing I must tell you is: When you download an ISO in Mac OS X on a slower gen Mac like a G4 like mine, upon launching Terminal to check the checksum, walk away, don’t run the test again. The test actually takes maybe 5 minutes or more, so please do your best to be patient and wait it out. There’s no bells and whistles going on with what terminal is actually doing, like all the aqua baloney, watch clock time cursor or anything!!!

Next I need to burn the DVD, get my G4 that I’ll use in the mail, format it’s HDD and install. I can hardly wait!!

If you’re looking to use that PowerPC G5, G4, or even G3 optimally on the web with awesome Mozilla web browsers, I suggest you download and try http://www.rpm-mozilla.org.uk/. Those are the main ones I’ve ever used that were optimized for PowerMacs. They work well and I’ve never read anything negative in feedback about them in user experience.

Mac Games I’ve liked December 28, 2009

I don’t play a lot of video games like I used to when I was a teen and younger, but I still have a couple I’ve played on Mac that I really liked. Tomb Raider 1 and the Gold levels (It was a bit more boring by the time I was playing the Gold levels, but still fun with some surprises) and Tomb Raider 2. (I never got to the bonus level) TR 2 was very fun with lots of excitement, great graphics, and Lara looked perfect. Any of TR the games beyond TR 2 were mostly boring, for more or less reasons of just being the same old, same old. Although I just may finish TR 3 with my sons because they like it and we have fun together with me reading the walkthrough. It’s actually quite tricky.

Aside from the Adventure/action genre, I’ve liked ThinkTanks, Cosmic Bugs (AKA CosmoBots) MacGamestore.com’s free online tennis (I love watching tennis too) and MYST. I addition to these mostly recreational games. i’ve had a wonderful time playing educational games with my kids, like Disney, Reader Rabbit, Math blaster, Dr, Suess, Jump Start music, Blue’s Kidergatrten, Mia’s Adventures, Hello Kitty, and Curious George.

Playing video and computer games is so much funner with family!

I just finally found the Support File for Disc Burning under Mac OS 9 with my Pioneer DVR-105, Formerly I wasn’t able to to so. This is good news, and I had to find it because no one else would.

Mac OS 10.5 System hog December 27, 2009

I’m very disappointed to report that Mac OS 10.5 is way too slow on my System. For the tasks I do, like even web browsing, watching movies, iTunes, Disk Utility (in particular repair permissions) in which Repair permissions, which IS a regular System maintenance procedure takes 1/2 hour to complete. I find this ridiculous and absurd to take that long to perform the most simple of OS X utilities. It seems like Apple is trying to keep users locked out of performing customization and working on their systems to keep them optimized. This is sad.

I’m currently working on 10.3.9 and I intend to do so except in cases I deem 10.5 more appropriate for more secure uses. I’m also running this on an external FW 400 drive currently and it’s still faster at performing than 10.5 on the internal ATA bus. 10.5 would have you believe that there’s problems with your Mac with how slow it even plays iTunes movies you’ve purchased! That’s outrageous and unacceptable. I can play all my iTunes movies on 10.3 from an external FW 400 drive like there’s no tomorrow, way fast!!!!

Give me a break, Apple!

G3 Update December 2, 2009

Well I have very good news! The G3 is running like a champ right now with the Radeon 9200 GPU installed and it ran most of the day with Dr. Suess Kinrgarten on Mac OS 9 for my 2 little girls. The Mac was shut down when I got home and I generally don’t like them to shut it down because it’s better to just let the System run without the wear and tear from starting up and reestablishing the temperatures in the System. I’ve read that that are still G3 B&W servers still running in server farms o this day! That’s amazing!

Clean install 1/1/09 on my G3 B&W December 1, 2009

Well, guess what. I made some major mistakes lately that I didn’t anticipate nor prepare for. I had been trouble shooting my G4 DA a while back and used the 9200 PCI for a while in it for testing and come along later down the road my G3 started having problems. I have tried and tried with no success to get the 9200 to work properly without artifacts and lines on the screen with much trouble shooting, including zapping the PRAM, reset CUDA and NVRAM, reinstall the ATI Rage and finally did a Clean install of MacOS 9.1.

Now everything is zippy and fast and I just decided to trash the Previous System folder since everything is already installed on mu G4 DA Mac OS 9.2.2 partition.

It’s now Tuesday and I just finished work at 11:00 tonight, had a few mozzarella cheese sandwiches after I performed the Clean install of MacOS 9.1. I don’t really feel like performing the update to 9.2.1-9.2.2 just yet as I’m quite tired and need some sleep, though I hate going to bed most of the time, yet I need to so I can get up and help around the house and be worth a dime and some salt.

Aw! What do you know? I got somethings stuck in my keyboard Function keys F10-F12! Looks like pencil leads or coal. Odd. I really need to clean this thing! Oh well, here goes!
